Solar Collector Sizing

Transitioning to renewable energy requires accurate system design to ensure adequate hot water supply year-round. Our Solar Collector Sizing Calculator helps engineers and installers determine the optimal number of solar panels, the total required collector area, and the matching thermal storage tank volume.

How to Use the Solar Collector Calculator

  1. Enter Occupancy: Specify the number of people relying on the solar hot water system.
  2. Select Climate Zone: Choose the appropriate solar irradiation zone (based on Turkish regional standards). Zone 1 provides the highest solar yield (Mediterranean), while Zone 4 provides the lowest (Eastern/Northern).
  3. Choose Collector Type: Select your technology. Flat Plate collectors are standard and cost-effective, while Evacuated Tube collectors offer higher efficiency and perform better in cold climates.
  4. Set Temperatures: Adjust the target hot water temperature (default 55°C) and incoming cold water temperature (default 15°C).
  5. Review Results: The tool calculates the Daily Demand (kWh), required Collector Area (m²), the Recommended Number of Collectors, and the ideal Tank Volume (L).

Why Collector Type Matters

The choice between flat plate and evacuated tube collectors significantly impacts the required area. Evacuated tubes have a higher thermal efficiency (often ~65% compared to ~45% for flat plates), meaning you need less surface area to harvest the same amount of solar energy. However, flat plates are often larger per unit (typically 2.0 m² vs 1.5 m²).
