Skid Mounted Packages

Modular construction is rapidly becoming the industrial standard for executing complex processing projects. At the core of this methodology is the skid mounted package (or modular process skid)—a totally integrated, self-contained processing system assembled within a pre-engineered steel structural frame. Delivered through our expert design and consultancy services, it effectively takes intricate industrial operations and packages them into a portable “plug-and-play” module.
Stick-Build vs. Skid Modularization

Traditionally, industrial plants were constructed using a “stick-build” approach. Massive amounts of raw pipe, loose valves, gigantic structural beams, and individual pumps were shipped to a chaotic construction site. Hundreds of contractors then worked simultaneously in the mud to build the system block-by-block. This approach is notoriously plagued by severe weather delays, spatial conflicts, and dangerous high-elevation welding.
A skid-mounted approach shifts this entire burden into a strictly controlled, indoor fabrication facility. The structural frame, pressure vessels, complex piping spools, and intricate electrical wiring are assembled simultaneously by specialized technicians in one location. Once fully tested, the entire skid is simply loaded onto a heavy-haul truck, shipped to the facility, bolted to the ground, and instantly connected to the mainline utilities.
The Anatomy of a Process Skid
- Structural Base Frame: A heavy-duty carbon steel matrix designed to perfectly carry both the static weight of the vessels and the intense dynamic sheer forces experienced during cross-country roadway or oceanic transport.
- Core Process Equipment: Depending deeply on the function, the skid will encapsulate heavy-duty centrifugal pumps, filter housings, process heat exchangers, and specialized gas compressors.
- Interconnecting Piping & Instrumentation: A highly complex geometric puzzle of steel pipes, control valves, Coriolis mass flow meters, and sensor arrays seamlessly mapped using 3D modeling software.
- Electrical & Control Panels: Localized PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) safely enclosed in explosion-proof junction boxes, ready to communicate instantly with the plant’s master control room.
Did you know? Because skid components are jammed into such a confined geometric footprint, engineers must execute incredibly precise “clash-detection” using digital twins to ensure pipes and steel beams do not physically intersect during fabrication.
Common Industry Examples
| Process Skid Function | Primary Application |
|---|---|
| Chemical Dosing and Injection | Precisely injecting critical corrosion inhibitors or biocides consistently into massive oil pipelines. |
| Fuel Gas Conditioning | Warming and filtering raw natural gas to extreme purity standards before feeding it directly into a delicate power turbine. |
| LACT (Lease Automatic Custody Transfer) | Highly sophisticated metering stations specifically measuring crude oil volume and quality as ownership officially transfers from one company to another. |
